As far as parents are concerned, the basic thing to be noticed in parenting is the realization that they too were once children. It is experience that later builds their conscience and later makes them behave like grown-ups. Children are spontaneous in their actions and are unpredictable. One cannot expect any child to behave like an adult. Hence, parents must know that child do things without thinking about the consequences. There is good and bad side to this nature of children. The good thing is that he child learns things by themselves. But the bad aspect is that by doing so, s/he will be exposed to unknown risks and dangers.
Spending time with your child is the most important point here. This is something most parents find difficult with. They hire babysitters for taking care of children. It is important to remember that your baby is growing with you and not with the babysitter. By spending time with your baby, you can understand his/her needs better and can slow them down when they grow aggressive over something. Kids have different time frame when compared with adults. In order to get an idea of this take your kid out and spend some time with him/her on a daily basis.
Most parents complain that their kids don’t understand them. The real problem actually lies with the parents. When people grow up, people tend to lose the kid in them. Hence, they ignore the small aspects of life, which kids easily recognize. A parent just needs to observe the child in order to understand his/her nature. This way parents will be able to understand the moods, temperament, skills and development of their children.
Perhaps the most important word in parenting is ‘listen’. Grown-ups very often have the bad habit of disregarding children’s talks as childish and immature. The fact is what they are talking about is important to them. A butterfly on a flower might not arise any surprise among parents. But for a kid seeing a butterfly for the first time, is something which entirely new and hence the finds the urge to talk about it to the father or mother. In such situations apparent can explain what a butterfly and show him pictures of butterflies, thus familiarizing him/her with the concept ‘butterfly’.
The most important lesson that a parent can teach his child is to love. Today, children grow in a time when there is lot of hate, a time of war and conflicts. S/he may not be able to identify what is right and wrong. A parent can teach him to love and respect for other people and cultures. This is perhaps the most important lesson a child can learn, since every single person belongs to this world and we need to love each other to make the world a better place. They must learn that theirs is not the only kind of people and culture that exist in this world, and that there are people living on the other side of the world, and it is also their presence that constitutes the world they live in.
